VSP Arrests 59 Impaired Drivers  RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a significant decrease in fatal traffic crashes over the 2021 Labor Day holiday weekend for Virginia, there was still an alarming number of deaths among motorcyclists. Of the eight traffic deaths reported for the holiday weekend to date, four involved motorcycles and one involved a moped. During the 2020 Labor Day weekend, there were a total of 20 traffic fatalities on Virginia’s highways. In order to further reduce and prevent traffic deaths and injuries on Virginia’s highways, we need the public’s help. The decisions are simple: drive smart, safe and sober.”

The United States Marshals Service in cooperation with the Virginia State Police recently completed Operation Rundown which resulted in the arrest of 24 registered sex offenders within the Western District of Virginia. Operation Rundown was a 6-week operation conducted from mid-July to the end of August. The targets of Operation Rundown were individuals that had arrest warrants issued for sex offender registry violations as well as other violent offenses within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Operation Rundown was a sex offender enforcement initiative targeting wanted sex offenders and violations of both the Virginia Sex Offender Registration laws and the Adam Walsh Act by registered sex offenders located within the Western District of Virginia. Operation Rundown encompassed all counties, including the cities and towns within the Western District of Virginia. The goal of the operation was to focus on enforcement operations to locate and apprehend wanted sex offenders and identify non-compliant sex offenders for possible state or federal prosecution.
Operation Rundown was a comprehensive effort by both the Virginia State Police and the United States Marshals Service to locate and apprehend sex offenders who are non-compliant as well as sex offenders who are wanted for additional criminal violations of law. Those offenders found to be non-compliant will be further investigated for both state and federal charges and will be referred to the appropriate charging officials located within the Western District of Virginia. “Although Operation Rundown was a targeted enforcement effort,” said U. S. Marshal Thomas Foster, “We continue on a daily basis to track down and locate those offenders who fail to comply with the terms and conditions of the sex offender registration program. Those offenders who remain non-compliant should not assume the enforcement window has closed.”
RICHMOND—Governor Ralph Northam today declared a state of emergency to respond to impacts from Tropical Depression Ida, which is expected to cause heavy rains and flooding along the I-81 and I-66 corridors. Localities in the southwest region have already experienced heavy rainfall in recent days, leading to flash floods and complicating storm preparation efforts. In addition to the flood threat, there is also a risk of tornadoes across the Commonwealth late Tuesday night through Wednesday.
“My thoughts are with those across the country impacted by this devastating storm,” said Governor Northam. “While we’re fortunate in Virginia to have avoided the hurricane itself, heavy rainfall is expected to cause additional flash flooding and dangerous conditions in portions of the Commonwealth. I’m grateful to the first responders and rescue crews currently on the ground, and I urge Virginians in these regions to stay alert.”
Severe weather began hitting parts of the Southwest region on Monday, August 30, and is expected to continue as remnants from Tropical Depression Ida arrive in the Commonwealth. Heavy rainfall has already caused flash flooding in Buchanan County, with potential for additional flooding, downed trees, electrical outages, and impacts to roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. Impacts are expected to be felt particularly along the I-81 and I-66 corridors.
A state of emergency allows the Commonwealth to mobilize resources and to deploy people and equipment to assist in response and recovery efforts. The declaration also allows officials from Virginia to coordinate planning and evacuation resources with our state and local partners. This action does not apply to individuals or private businesses.
