DUBLIN, Va. (AP) _ Volvo is preparing to lay off 734 employees at its truck plant in Virginia. Volvo spokesman John Mies said Tuesday that the layoffs at the New River Valley Assembly Plant in Dublin will begin in February. He says there’s been a slowdown in demand for highway trucks and that the company must adapt to changes in the market. The 1.6-million-square-foot plant is the largest Volvo truck manufacturing facility in the world. It employs 2,800 workers in Pulaski County. Suzanne Clark, spokeswoman for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, says Volvo has assured officials that it still intends to move forward with its plan to spend $38.1 million in upgrades at the plant. Clark says state officials are ready to work with local partners to assist the workers any way they can.
