RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office says it has full faith in state Inspector General June Jennings despite allegations from her staff that she failed to investigate properly the death of a 24-year-old mentally ill inmate. McAuliffe’s office issued a statement Monday saying it had reviewed a complaint saying Jennings had inadequately investigated the death of Jamycheal Mitchell, who died in a Portsmouth jail cell in August after losing so much weight that his heart stopped. The complaint was filed by a senior staff member in the inspector general’s office and two independent contractors who accused Jennings of lying to state lawmakers. McAuliffe’s chief of staff, Paul Reagan, conducted the review of the complaint and found that no action against Jennings is needed.
