Roanoke police say a motorcycle rider died at the scene early this morning when the bike hit a utility pole at the intersection of Williamson Road and Compton Street. Police shut down Williamson between Wayne Street and Pocohontas Avenue so they could investigate, and they asked motorists to avoid the area. Police have not released the motorcycle rider’s name.

State police report a crime is committed every 74 seconds in Virginia. That’s just one statistic contained in the latest crime analysis report.

“2011 Crime in Virginia” reports narcotics offenses rose about 7%, but violent offenses were down 6.2%.

A new poll shows most Virginia Republicans prefer Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. Gingrich has a slight lead over Romney in the latest poll from Quinnipiac University.  30% of Virginia Republicans polled prefer Gingrich while 25% favor Romney for the nomination.  The other candidates are in single digits. Wintergreen Resort Photo

Skiers will be able to hit the slopes in Nelson County this weekend when Wintergreen Resort opens its winter season. They made some snow earlier this month when temperatures fell below freezing, and they plan to make even more starting Saturday night.  But Wintergreen says several slopes are ready to open Saturday, along with the tubing park and ice skating rink. Organizers of The Community Christmas Store say they plan to help more than 1,200 people and their families this holiday season. Low-income people in Roanoke County, Vinton, Salem and Craig County have signed up for help.  The Community Christmas Store President Kristine Bronnenkant says they’re still collecting cash and other donations. They can be dropped off at this year’s location in the former Christian Life International Church building at 4335 West Main Street in the Glenvar area. Low-income familes that have signed up can shop in the store December 9th and 10th.
