The 40-million dollar renovation at Cave Spring High School should be completely under roof by mid-December as Roanoke County Schools works toward a fall 2020 reopening. Ken Nicely is the school system superintendent; he taught at Cave Spring High School years ago. Nicely toured Cave Spring High School today as Spectrum Design and Avis Construction showed off their work to date. The students, faculty and staff are all in trailers on site.

The Blue Star program honors all those who have served their country in the U.S. military. On this Veteran’s day morning near the Mill Mountain Star, a Blue Star Memorial marker was unveiled after short speeches and patriotic chorus music conducted by the RSO’s David Stuart Wiley.  A local group – the Westchester Garden Club – worked with Roanoke Parks and Recreation on bringing a Blue Star Memorial marker to Mill Mountain. There are more than 3200 in all 50 states. City councilman Bill Bestpitch – a staff sergeant at the end of his 8-year Army stint – was a speaker:

So how do Roanokers feel about a temporary closure of a Blue Ridge Parkway segment in both directions next June 6th so the biking portion of the Ironman 70.3 triathlon can be routed there? The National Park Service wants to hear from local residents online at the National Park Service website. If Ironman can’t get permission the 56 mile biking portion will all be run on other roadways. The Roanoke Rescue Mission’s more high-end thrift store – the 2nd Helpings Cafe, which also serves food and features original artwork, is holding a holiday open house tomorrow from 9 to 5.
