8th district Republican delegate Joe McNamara earned his first full 2-year term to the General Assembly tonight after winning a special election last November. McNamara topped Democrat challenger Darlene Lewis. Before the General Assembly session reconvenes in January,  Before it was confirmed that Democrats had flipped both the House of Delegates and State Senate – with the Governor’s mansion they now control all three branches of state government for the first tie since 1993 – McNamara looked ahead to that possibility:

The fifth gun found at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport this year was owned by a Californian trying to bring a loaded 38 caliber revolver through the checkpoint this morning. TSA officials spotted the gun on an X-Ray monitor and notified airport police – who then cited the man on a weapons charge. In 2018 six guns in all were confiscated at ROA baggage checkpoints. The TSA says nationwide last year, 4,239 firearms were discovered in carry-on bags at checkpoints across the country, averaging about 11.6 firearms per day.

The citizen-driven Task Force to Reduce Gun Violence offered a wide range of recommendations to Roanoke City Council today after four months of public meetings and input. It entails everything from more community programs to helping inmates find jobs when they get out of the city jail – to “pop-up” potlucks in local neighborhoods that can foster goodwill and break down barriers.
