The Wythe County Sheriff’s office says there are at least five cases in recent weeks along the Interstate 81 corridor. In each instance, the woman enters a waiting room (usually respiratory therapy), lifts a wallet, then buys pre-paid credit cards. Surveillance photos in at least two cases show her leaving in a gray Dodge Stratus, and one instance shows it being driven by a male accomplice. Investigators say the car does not have a front license plate.
Investigators are trying to learn if this string of thefts extends to other areas as well. They tell us at least one of the stolen cards was used just this week in Richmond.
