For the first time in more than 20 years a Republican has been appointed to Roanoke City Council. More from WFIR’s Clark Palmer has that story.

In a historic shift, Roanoke voters have elected Republican Nick Hagen to City Council, marking the first time in about two decades a Republican has won a seat. Democrat Terry McGuire, who won about 19% of the vote, will become the vice mayor following Tuesday’s election. Democrat Phazhon Nash secured a council seat with the second-highest vote share at just under 19%. Hagen’s approximately 15% was enough to edge out Independent Evelyn Powers and Democrat Benjamin Woods.
