Virginia voters approved it last November: a constitutional amendment exempting some veterans from property taxes on their homes and the first acre of property. Roanoke County Commissioner of the Revenue Nancy Horn figures about 200 veterans qualify for the property tax exemption in the county, but less than 60 have applied for it.

The amendment exempts veterans with a 100 per cent service-related permanent and total disability. Horn would prefer that anyone who might qualify apply before the tax rolls are next adjusted in April, but anyone qualified will never be turned away.

The property tax exemption also applies to surviving spouses.
