RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ The state Supreme Court is considering whether a wrongful death finding against the state should stand in the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech, and whether the university’s president should be tried for negligence.
The justices heard the consolidated appeals Thursday of the state and of the families of two young women who were among the 32 students and faculty killed during the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The state asked the court to reverse a jury’s findings that the state was negligent by delaying warnings to the campus after the first shootings on campus. Attorneys representing the families are seeking to put Tech’s president, Charles Steger, on trial to hold him accountable for his actions on April 16, 2007.
An opinion is expected in two months.
