A former NASCAR driver says without recent safety improvements in race cars and on the tracks, some of the accidents we see these days would lead to many more serious injuries — or worse. Rick Mast grew up and still lives in the Lexington area, and he spoke with WFIR’s Evan Jones.
The sudden departure of Ted Cruz from the presidential race leaves many Cruz delegates with a decision on what to do — including most of Virginia’s Republican delegates. Many of the state’s GOP delegates who are required to select Donald Trump on the national convention’s first ballot were prepared to support Ted Cruz if it got past that point. Roanoke County school officials say a bomb threat disrupted classes today at Burlington Elementary School, but a police search turned up nothing suspicious. The latest message: Burlington Elementary has been cleared by the Roanoke County Police Department. Students have returned to the building. Dismissal will take place as scheduled with an increased police presence. We thank the Roanoke Co. Police Dept. for their prompt response. We continue to investigate this incident.
A new statewide survey of Virginia middle and high school students shows significant decreases in those practicing risky behaviors — especially smoking. The survey results show smoking among Virginia high school students is down to just about 8%, and student use of harder drugs like heroin cocaine and meth is down significantly. WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.
2016 appears ready to be the best year for home sales in the Roanoke Valley since the Great Recession. The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors reports 937 home sales for the first three months of the year — up 9% from last year and up almost 19% from two years ago. WFIR’s Evan Jones has more:
