RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ A student movement called known as “Hokies for Crouse” is helping to raise money for the family of slain Virginia Tech police officer Deriek Crouse.
The fund had raised more than $67,000 as of Sunday night through online and in-person donations for the family of the officer shot to death Thursday on the Blacksburg campus. Crouse joined the campus police force in October 2007 and was a married father of five children and stepchildren.
The money will go directly to the memorial fund that the university set up at the National Bank of Blacksburg. The students also are collecting gift cards and presents for the family for the holidays.
Those spearheading the movement say it was important to show their support since Crouse was a member of the Hokie family.
