The Roanoke-Salem area Swift Water Rescue Team put its training and skills to work in flood-swollen eastern Virginia overnight, rescuing a woman from a car caught in high water. WFIR’s Evan Jones has their story.
The team is comprised of specially-trained members of the Roanoke and Salem City fire departments, summoned from home last night as part of a statewide mutual response. Continuous heavy rains pounded portions of eastern and northern Virginia yesterday, the same system creating devastating floods in parts of New York State and Pennsylvania.
The swift water team had barely arrived at Colonial Beach on the Northern Neck when sent on a rescue call. Salem Fire Captain Tim Graham says on their way, they encountered water over the road and noticed a car swept off to the side. Team members made their way to the car, found a woman inside, and brought her to safety — a successful rescue hours from home in the middle of the night.
