The Association Released a report this week that shows more than 130,000 Virginians with Alzheimer’s and related dementia — there is no known way to cure it, prevent it, or even slow its progression. Nationally, the number is almost 5.5 million. With 78 million baby boomers turning senior in the next 18 years, the number of families dealing with an Alzheimer’s patient is expect to triple. It can take a tremendous toll, physical and financial, on their families. Sue Friedman, the Association’s Executive Director for Central and Western Virginia, says one thing is needed now above all else, at that is drastically increased research. She says it could help ease the burdens on families — and on and states paying for Alzheimer’s care Medicaid recipients.
