State Police say a US Army Sergeant from Colorado was at the wheel of a car that plowed at full speed into a large boulder that fell onto Interstate 77 Monday night in Carroll County. Police identify the driver as 31-year-old Su Wan Ko of Colorado Springs. (Photo at left courtesy Virginia State Police.)
State Police say the boulder blocked the entire left lane and was bigger than the rental car that ran into it while heading up the the mountain on I-77 from the North Carolina line toward Fancy Gap. VDOT Spokesperson Heidi Underwood says this stretch of highway has not been a problem area for falling rock in the past. Crews will try to determine where the boulder came from and exactly how it came loose. State police say Ko had no chance to see it in the dark, and there were no skid marks.
