State Police say the boulder blocked the entire left lane and was bigger than the car that ran into it around 8:30 pm heading up the the mountain on I-77 from the North Carolina line toward Fancy Gap. VDOT Spokesperson Heidi Underwood says this stretch of highway has not been a problem area for falling rock in the past. Crews will try to determine where the boulder came from and exactly how it came loose. State police say the driver had no chance to see it in the dark, and there were no skid marks. Police have not yet released the driver’s name or home town.
