As part of Roanoke’s I-581 and Elm Avenue interchange project, crews will be putting a new traffic pattern in place. Beginning tomorrow morning, the eastbound lanes of Elm will be moved to the newly constructed portion of the bridge over I-581. Westbound lanes will remain the same. To achieve the new traffic pattern, left lane closures are planned for east and westbound Elm Avenue today and tomorrow from 8 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. the following morning. The southbound on-ramp to I-581 will be closed tonight from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. tomorrow.

TRAFFIC ALERT: TRAFFIC SWITCH PLANNED FOR EASTBOUND ELM AVENUE IN ROANOKE
SALEM – As part of the Interstate 581 and Elm Avenue interchange project in Roanoke, drivers traveling along Elm Avenue Wednesday morning, Sept. 3, will notice a new traffic pattern in place. The eastbound lanes of Elm Avenue will be moved to the newly constructed portion of the bridge over I-581 and the westbound lanes will remain in the current configuration. To achieve the new traffic pattern, left lane closures are planned for east and westbound Elm Avenue Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 8 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. the following morning. The southbound on-ramp to I-581 will be closed Tuesday Sept. 2, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. The traffic switch is necessary for crews to move from phase one to phase two of the project which includes construction of the center portion of the bridge. This work is weather and work schedule permitting. Message boards will be in place to warn drivers of the change.
