BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (AP) _ Law enforcement officials say they are getting close to finding out who is responsible for the disappearance of two young sisters from Maryland nearly 40 years ago. Authorities said at a news conference Wednesday that information led them to Taylor Mountain in Bedford County, Virginia, where police are searching for evidence in the disappearance of 10-year-old Katherine Lyon and 12-year-old Sheila Lyon. The sisters vanished from a mall in Wheaton, Maryland, March 25, 1975. Montgomery County, Maryland, police Capt. Darren Francke say authorities have zeroed in on the suspects. In February, Montgomery County Police said they had identified a convicted child sex offender in a Delaware prison as a person of interest in the case.

BEDFORD CO., Va. (AP) — Law enforcement officials say investigators are searching near Lynchburg, Virginia, in connection with the unsolved 1975 abduction of two young sisters from Maryland. The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office in Bedford, Virginia, said in a statement posted late Tuesday on its website that the office was investigating the kidnapping of 10-year-old Katherine Lyon and 12-year-old Sheila Lyon from Wheaton, Maryland. The news release said Bedford law enforcers were investigating along with Montgomery County Police in Maryland, Virginia State Police and the Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The release said recent developments had led authorities to the Taylor Mountain area of Virginia’s Bedford County. In February, Montgomery County Police said they had identified a convicted child sex offender in a Delaware prison as a person of interest in the case.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police are assisting the Montgomery County Maryland Police Department with a homicide investigation. Last week investigators from the Montgomery County Police Department Cold Case Squad traveled to Bedford County and met with investigators from the Bedford County Sheriff’s and Virginia State Police.
Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation no further details will be released at this time.
