From Roanoke City Police: On April 24, 2014 at 10:09 a.m. Roanoke Police responded to the 3200 block of Hershberger Road NW to investigate a report of a shooting. Once on scene, officers discovered the victim lying in the parking lot of Schewels. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Officers determined the victim was a Schewels employee who exited the side of the business carrying a bank bag and got behind the wheel of a pick-up truck in order to drive away. The investigation has determined the suspect approached the pick up truck from the passenger side, tried to open the passenger side door but found it locked, and then fired multiple rounds into the vehicle. The victim then either fell or rolled out of the vehicle onto the pavement of the parking lot.

The pick up truck, which was unoccupied, then continued in reverse through the parking lot of the Home Depot, striking several other vehicles and objects before crashing into a parked vehicle. Eyewitnesses told officers the suspect fled on foot toward the rear of the Schewels parking lot. At this time, detectives believe the suspect took the bank bag. Officers set up a perimeter and performed a K9 track. Officers also did an extensive canvas of the area where the suspect was last seen running to determine if anyone might have seen the suspect, or the suspect’s direction of travel. Officers are also gathering all the available video surveillance from Schewels, and any surrounding businesses, that might assist in the investigation. Anyone with any information should call the Roanoke Valley Crime Line at 540-344-8500.
