RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Schools in Richmond and seven southwest Virginia school divisions are participating in a project to reduce childhood hunger among low-income families. The project will transform schools into “food hubs” during the 2015-2016 school year and provide additional assistance to families over the summer vacation. Students in the selected schools will be offered a nutritious breakfast, lunch and after-school supper, plus packs of easily consumed non-perishable food to take home on weekends and breaks. Families receiving food stamps will also get an additional $60 a month in benefits during the summer. Besides Richmond, the participating school divisions are the cities of Bristol and Galax and the counties of Buchanan, Grayson, Lee, Scott and Smyth. First lady Dorothy McAuliffe will spearhead the Virginia Hunger-Free Kids Act Demonstration Project.
