SUSSEX, Va. (AP) – Police in Virginia say a man is dead after troopers exchanged gunfire with someone in a vehicle reported stolen in Connecticut. Virginia State Police said in a news release Wednesday that a trooper tried to stop the vehicle, but it sped away. During a pursuit on Interstate 95, police say someone inside the vehicle fired shots. When it left the interstate, the gunman fired at troopers positioned to stop the vehicle. Troopers returned fire and police say the driver died. A passenger was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say a police dog was fatally shot, but no troopers were hurt. Three troopers are on administrative leave. New Haven, Connecticut, police say detectives traveled to Virginia because the man may be a suspect in a slaying there.
