Roanoke Police are investigating a double homicide. Police found the bodies of a man and woman in an apartment in the 300 block of Walnut Avenue late last night.  News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones spoke with a next-door neighbor.

The victims in the homicide in the 300 block of Walnut Avenue have been identified as Michael Lee Smith, age 38; and Joyce Ann Payne II, age 35.

News release from Roanoke Police:

On April 28, 2011 at 11:07 p.m. Roanoke Police responded to a residence in the 300 block of Walnut Avenue in reference to a reported gunshot wound. Upon the officer’s arrival, they located a male and female inside the apartment, who were deceased. Both deaths are being investigated as homicides. The interior of the apartment had been ransacked.

The identity of both persons is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin of both individuals.

The bodies are being taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office to officially determine the manner and cause of death.

The investigation is in the early stages and more information will be released as the investigation develops.
