State Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath County, is urging Gov. Terry McAuliffe to make a line-item budget veto. Deeds recommends that the Democratic governor strip from the budget the amendment that requires McAuliffe to get General Assembly approval to expand coverage to 400,000 low-income Virginians. The senator says if the General Assembly cannot garner the required two-thirds majority vote to override the veto, Gov. McAuliffe can continue exploring ways to expand Medicaid. On Friday, State Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Franklin County, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he believes the amendment is “veto-proof.” It is not clear yet whether or not the governor has the power to make a line-item budget veto when it comes to the state Medicaid battle between Republicans and Democrats.
