UPDATE: Police ID Roanoke fatal shooting victim, suspect

Roanoke Police say the suspect and victim involved in a fatal shooting last night knew each other. Investigators say 18-year-old Laron Simmons shot and killed 40-year-old Jeremy Altman after an argument in the 2100 block of Colgate Street, Northeast. That’s between Williamson and Plantation Roads. Simmons is charged with second degree murder.

UPDATED NEWS RELEASE: Roanoke Police have identified the deceased victim as Jeremy Altman, 40 of Roanoke. The investigation indicates the victim engaged in a verbal dispute with Laron Simmons, 18 of Roanoke, which escalated to the shooting. Investigation indicates that the two men were known to one another prior to the incident. Simmons has been arrested and is charged with second degree murder. This is an ongoing investigation. PREVIOUS FROM ROANOKE CITY POLICE: On April 25, 2019 just before 9:30 pm, Roanoke Police responded to the 2100 block of Colgate St NE in reference to a report of person with a gunshot wound. On arrival officers located an adult male who had been shot. The male was pronounced deceased on scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS personnel.
