A Hollins University professor who closely follows events in Washington says members of both political parties had to stomach provisions they dislike just to reach the point of putting a debt ceiling increase up for a vote. News/Talk 960’s Bob Clark has the story.
Both houses of Congress worked almost non-stop for days in hopes of getting their members to OK the agreement before tonight’s midnight deadline that would keep the U.S. from defaulting. The talks went on for months before both sides reached a compromise to put up for a vote. Hollins University Professor of Political Science, Ed Lynch says it wasn’t easy to reach the agreement for either party. Lynch says both parties had to consider provisions they did not favor; many Democrats were unhappy with no tax increases, and many Republicans did not favor deeper cuts in defense spending or lack of cuts in some entitlements.
