Liberty University says a hiker that fell to his death yesterday afternoon was a student named Dylan Engel.
Full release from Liberty University: Liberty University has been notified that one of its own, student Dylan Engel, died after an accident at Apple Orchard Falls in Botetourt County, Va., this afternoon. The family has been notified and no further details are available at this time. The Liberty community offers its condolences to Dylan’s family and friends and will continue to lift them up in prayer through this tragedy. LU Shepherds and Student Leadership are offering their support to the Liberty community through this difficult time and Student Counseling Services are being made available to those in need.
Full release from Botetourt County: At 2:07 p.m., Botetourt County dispatched crews to Apple Orchard Falls in Buchanan to respond to a call of a male hiker falling from the trail. The caller estimated a fall from a height of approximately 75 feet. Crews from Buchanan Fire Department, Blue Ridge Fire Department, Eagle Rock Fire Department, and Botetourt County Fire and EMS responded. Upon reaching the victim, crews attempted resuscitation efforts but were unsuccessful. Approximately 20 responders are on scene and will remain so for the next few hours in order to transport the victim from the isolated, wooded location.
