From Roanoke City Police:On July 16, 2015 at 9:22 p.m. Roanoke Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 3100 block of Oakland Boulevard NW. Upon arrival officers located an adult female and a two year old child who had both been shot. Roanoke Fire EMS transported both victims to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where the child was pronounced dead. The adult female survived and is receiving treatment. Through the course off the investigation, detectives developed Warner Loving Hunter III, age 25, of Roanoke as the suspect in the shooting. The shooting occurred in the street in front of Hunter’s residence and he fled the scene in a vehicle after the incident.At approximately 1 a.m. on July 17th, Hunter was taken into custody by officers with Virginia State Police and Covington Police at a residence in Covington. He will be transported to the Roanoke City Jail.

Evidence technicians are processing the Oakland Boulevard scene to recover physical evidence and detectives continue to interview potential witnesses. The vehicle Hunter drove to Alleghany County will also be processed for evidence. At this point in the initial investigation, it appears the suspect and the adult female victim were involved in a prior relationship. Officers served Hunter with a warrant for the murder of the two-year-old child and a warrant for the malicious wounding of the adult female.
