The threat of lightning tonight is causing a delay in this week’s planned detours this week on Interstate 81. Whenever they begin, these nighttime detours won’t be the last. It is all part of the project to add five miles of truck climbing lanes heading up to Christiansburg. Crews will install bridge beams over 81 between the Elliston and Christiansburg exits, and at various times, traffic will be detoured overnight onto US 11/460. VDOT says more beams will go in, and more detours will be needed, later this summer WFIR’s Evan Jones has the story.
