Around 10:15 PM last night the Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to a house fire near the 1400 block of North Mill Road. When units arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the home. Fire officials say the fire started in the den and was contained to that room. Two people were home at the time, both escaped without injury. Firefighters also rescued pet birds that were in the house. The fire is under investigation.
