Franklin County has already requested it — now Roanoke County is also considering asking VDOT to place through truck restrictions on Crowell Gap Road. As News/Talk 960’s Evan Jones reports, it’s a rough road by any standard, especially one for trucks.

Crowell Gap Road is winding, steep, and narrow — and gravel over the top, subject to occasional washouts. In theory, it can be a shortcut between Clearbrook and Smith Mountain Lake. But some residents along the road have seen cases where larger vehicles can’t get through. Franklin County has already asked VDOT to restrict through trucks and trucks with trailers from the road; now Roanoke County is considering joining the request. A public hearing begins today at 3:00 pm at the Roanoke County Administration Building. Should Supervisors ultimately agree, the request will go to the Secretary of Transportation, and he will make the decision.
