UPDATE: The officers that were involved in the shooting are Officer J.L. Haley, Officer C.L. Mullins and Officer J.L. Smith. The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Reginald Alan Wilson, of Roanoke.
The shooting happened in the 2300 block of Melrose Avenue around 2:00 a.m. yesterday. Officers with the Roanoke Police Department were attempting to break up a fight when they heard gunshots. An officer noticed a man with his arm extended in the air near where they shots were heard. It’s believed he was the individual who fired the shots. He began to run and officers followed him. They ended up in an alley and the suspect started running toward the officers with the gun pointed in their direction. The officers told him to drop the weapon but he did not listen. Two of the officers filed their weapons and hit the suspect three times in his legs. The suspect has only been described as an 18-year-old black male. He was taken to the hospital, there’s no word on his condition. Even though only two officers fired their weapons, three officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
