The newest edition to the growing number of Automated External Defibrillators – AED’s – in Roanoke City public spaces was unveiled this morning at the Mill Mountain Star. The Mill Mountain “De-Fib” will be installed outside the restroom shelter near the star. There are other new AED’s in Wasena, Smith, and Elmwood Parks, and at River’s Edge North. Richard Shok owns the AED Team company that distributes these user-friendly devices, which can help revive someone in cardiac arrest:

The Roanoke-based Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation has just announced its latest donation targeted for 10 non-profit clinics statewide that provide free or low-cost oral healthcare. Four local agencies that will share part of the $622,000 grant took part in a “big check” ceremony today at Bradley Free Clinic.  New Horizons Healthcare is one of the other local grant recipients; besides New Horizons and the Bradley Clinic, the Rescue Mission of Roanoke and CHIP will also receive grant funding from Delta Dental. VCU dental students who now do a residency at Bradley Free Clinic will now spend time at these other locations, due in part to the new funding. The Morgan Dana Harrington Scholarship Fund – named for the slain Virginia Tech student who went missing after a 2009 concert in Charlottesville – has raised more than $500,000 since its inception 14 years ago. Some of that total came from the annual “Docs for Morgan” basketball game that pits Carilion Clinic physicians and residents against Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students.  There is no charge to attend “Docs for Morgan,” on Wednesday at 7pm, in the Patrick Henry High School gym, although donations will be accepted on site. All involved say they are very spirited, competitive games. First-year student Paul Griffin was the recipient of this year’s Harrington Scholarship – and he will play in the game next Wednesday:

The outpatient surgery wing at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital has gone from 4 to 8 operating rooms after a ribbon cutting today. Dr. Joseph Moskal is a senior Vice President for Carilion Clinic; he says Roanoke’s aging population in part led to the need for the outpatient surgery expansion at Carilion Community. Moskal also says it means additional learning opportunities for nursing students at Radford University Carilion – who are located in the same downtown building.
