The Trooper’s radar recorded the vehicle traveling at 80 mph in the posted 70 mph zone on Interstate 81 at the 196.8 mile marker.  During the course of the traffic stop, the Trooper noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded ten pounds of marijuana. Further investigation revealed the two occupants were traveling to Roanoke, Va. The driver, Whitney Brooke Dudley, 23, of Roanoke, Va., was charged with speeding, and possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Rep. Bob Goodlatte

From Congressman Bob Goodlatte:  Last night, the United States Senate failed to reach 60 votes to pass legislation to extend funding for the federal government. Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) released the following statement on the federal government shut down:

“Senate Democrats had two choices last night: Vote to keep the government open, allow important discussions to continue, ensure our troops are paid, and accept another opportunity to fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program for 66,000 Virginia children, or vote to shut down the government. It’s disappointing that they chose to stand in the way of military readiness and children’s health coverage all because they have not yet gotten a deal on DACA. It defies logic.

“By forcing this government shutdown, Senator Schumer and his colleagues are putting unlawful immigrants before America’s lawful citizens, children, and our troops. No discussions on including DACA in this funding bill should be on the table while Senator Schumer and his allies hold the American people and our government hostage. Reopen the government so that these important conversations can continue.

“Meanwhile, the House passed a long-term funding package and reauthorized CHIP months ago. And again this week the House passed a bill to fund the government and ensure CHIP continues. The Senate needs to act. Senator Schumer, stop the politics and fund our government.”

Henry Routon

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Mark Warner, a member of the Senate Finance and Budget Committees, and Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Budget Committees, released the following statement:

“A year after Donald Trump became President, he and Republican leaders in Congress have delivered the shutdown he’s been calling for. Those who will suffer the most from his actions are federal employees and DoD personnel in Virginia who have already been hurt as we lurch from one budget crisis to the next. We put forward offer after offer tonight to prevent a shutdown and keep the government open over the weekend so we could work together to finalize a deal. Republicans rejected every single one. Virginians are counting on us to pass a bill that funds our military, education and health care programs, extends the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and protects Dreamers. We’re still at the table so we can reach that deal, and Republicans should reopen the government immediately and join us.”

On Thursday, Warner and Kaine announced their opposition to another one-month CR because it would needlessly perpetuate budgetary dysfunction and uncertainty for Virginia and the military. They called on Republican leadership to avert a government shutdown and stay in session through the weekend to finalize a deal.

Rep. Morgan Griffith

Saturday, January 20, 2018 – Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement after the United States Senate failed to pass a measure to fund the government, thus triggering a partial government shutdown:

“The Senate has failed to govern. The House of Representatives passed a measure that funded the government for four weeks and provided six years of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The Senate did not pass this measure, or even amend it and send it back to the House for us to give it due consideration. Instead, senators did nothing.

“This latest failure only reaffirms that the Senate’s modern filibuster-cloture-hold rule needs to end. It is damaging the Republic, and in this case, Americans will suffer the consequences.

“Virginians are particularly affected by the Senate’s refusal to reauthorize CHIP, as the Commonwealth is almost out of funds for the program.”
