Roanoke County police have apprehended several suspects in a series of vehicle break-ins. The arrest took place very early Saturday morning in the Buck Mountain Road area. After a brief car chase in what turned out to be a stolen car, 20 year old Tyrese Hairston and three male juveniles were detained – the driver of the car they were in got away on foot. County police say the suspects had broken into 38 vehicles in the Penn Forest and Buck Mountain Road areas – and had stolen at least one handgun. Police are still looking for the driver of that stolen Chevy Impala.

FloydFest 19 meant another return home for Salem native Drew Lawhorn, who left the area to further his career as a drummer in Nashville about a decade ago. He was with Nora Jane Struthers and her band The Party Line this past weekend. It was the first FloydFest for Lawhorn with Struthers, although he’s played the festival previously with his good friend and Roanoke singer-songwriter Jordan Harman. Nora Jane Struthers and The Party Line are back at 5 Points Music Sanctuary in Roanoke on August 15.

Total Action for Progress has launched a new fundraising arm that also helps build business skills for those involved in its operation – TAP Books. Most of those donated books will be sold online via Amazon and E-Bay; others too expensive to ship versus the profit realized will be offered to TAP clients in various programs. David Moore is the director for TAP Books, which he calls a “social entreprenuership” effort that is already raising money for TAP programs – $30,000 to date:
