He’s still collecting the 125 valid signatures needed but Southeast Roanoke City neighborhood activist Duane Howard says he intends to run as an independent candidate for City Council in May. Howard points to his efforts in routing the greenway through Smith Park and working with the Rescue Mission to be better neighbors in southeast Roanoke. He also intends to make history as the first openly gay City Council candidate. Howard has run for City Council and for Mayor in the past.
