The new executive director just announced at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture won’t start officially until January 1st, but E.B. Smith already is envisioning what the relocation to Melrose Plaza from Center in the Square sometime in 2025 might look like. Smith’s work with the H.C. Smith consulting group often involved clients from the arts and culture world; he’s also an actor who portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. in a play at Mill Mountain Theatre last year.
(from news release) The Harrison Museum of African American Culture’s Board of Directors announced the appointment of E.B. Smith as its new executive director. Smith brings over two decades of experience in theatre, education and organizational development to this role. The appointment is a key component of the museum’s strategic planning process, which has been a focus for 2024. As the museum prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary alongside a relocation to Melrose Plaza, the institution is planning for expanded community impact and engagement.
Smith brings significant expertise in cultural programming and organizational development, most recently serving as partner and managing director at HC Smith Ltd., where he led strategic planning and diversity initiatives for numerous cultural institutions. “I am deeply honored to lead the Harrison Museum of African American Culture at this exciting moment in its history,” said Smith. “As we reimagine our role in ensuring the vitality of the Harrison Museum, we have an extraordinary opportunity to deepen our impact in Roanoke and the broader Blue Ridge region. Our mission of celebrating the legacies of the African diaspora with pride and inspiration will guide us as we create new partnerships and expand our programming to serve our community.”
