ROSELAND, Va. (WFIR) — Devils Backbone Brewing Company has announced a three-year partnership with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) to support the restoration of the James River Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The brewery will contribute $33,000 to the effort, which includes removing invasive species and enhancing the habitat.
The partnership’s initial focus is on eliminating Autumn Olive, an invasive plant species that disrupts ecosystems and crowds out native plants. The project began this past summer with mechanical spraying and treatments and will culminate in a prescribed burn during the partnership’s third year. In 2026, wildflowers will be planted to restore the landscape and improve biodiversity.
The James River WMA spans more than 1,000 acres, offering opportunities for hunting, fishing, canoeing, and other outdoor activities. Officials say the restoration effort aligns with DWR’s mission of conserving Virginia’s natural resources and encouraging public engagement with the outdoors.
“DWR is excited about this multi-year partnership with Devils Backbone and their dedication to restoring and preserving Virginia’s wild places,” said DWR Executive Director Ryan Brown. “By investing in habitat restoration at the James River WMA, Devils Backbone is supporting a healthy ecosystem for wildlife and an enjoyable experience for visitors.”
In addition to habitat restoration, the partnership will feature educational events and initiatives to engage outdoor and conservation enthusiasts.
Founded in 2008, Devils Backbone is a craft brewery and distillery located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Known for its Vienna Lager and Orange Smash canned cocktail, the company has locations in Roseland, Lexington, and Charlottesville.
