Every year since 2021 as a fundraiser, the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke has “sold” the Mill Mountain Star – unofficially – in return for a corporate sponsorship. This year Roanoke Gas was the sponsor – and they wanted the iconic star renamed in memory of Susan Williams, the 80-year-old retired executive director for the Local Office on Aging. Williams was murdered near her South Roanoke home earlier this year. At the Mill Mountain Star dedication this morning Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb said he knew Susan Williams well:
Cobb called her a “dear friend and mentor.” Susan Williams’ son Trenor said his mother was a true “servant leader.”
