RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ State officials say Virginia is making significant progress in a push to improve highways and bridges.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Wednesday that 111 projects have been completed and 625 are in preliminary phases.

This year, more than $2 billion worth of contracts for construction and maintenance were advertised by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Transportation Secretary Sean T. Connaughton says the projects include rehabilitating deteriorating roads and bridges and widening and enhancing roads.
