No arrests yet – after a police visit – at the downtown Roanoke office of Congressman Bob Goodlatte where a sit-in is currently taking place. The Roanoke NAACP chapter wants Goodlatte – who chairs the House Judiciary Committee – to hold a hearing on restoring the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in its entirety after portions were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court 3 years ago. National NAACP president Cornell William Brooks is in town taking part in the sit-in. Brooks, a civil rights attorney by trade, says the Voting Rights Act provisions struck down impact minorities and young people – making it harder for them to vote.
