ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) _ Maryland’s Senate president says the state government shouldn’t push the Washington Redskins to change their name. Two delegates have proposed a resolution urging Redskins owner Dan Snyder to change the team’s name to something not offensive to Native Americans. They said the current name has been associated with “gruesome acts of genocide” and doesn’t suit the team’s proud tradition.

Thomas V. Mike Miller told reporters Wednesday that he is a Redskins fan himself. He says he considers the measure misguided, like trying to legislate foreign policy at the state level. He prefers leaving the issue up to Snyder and the National Football League.

The Redskins play their home games at FedEx Field in Prince George’s County. The D.C. Council recently passed a resolution similar to the one proposed in Maryland
