A special ceremony this morning honoring the man credited with saving pro baseball in the valley – the late Kelvin Bowles – at the stadium he convinced the City of Salem to build more than three decades ago – or else face losing the major league baseball-affiliated team due to inadequate facilities. A bronze plaque proclaiming Bowles as “Salem’s Baseball Savior,” was unveiled and will be installed at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
Bowles also scouted part-time for several major league teams as was awarded a World Series ring when the Florida Marlins won the championship in 2003. City of Salem Director of Communications Mike Stevens was a TV sports anchor back in those days:
