The Roanoke County Police Department is conducting an investigation at Hollins University after human remains were discovered Tuesday afternoon on the campus. Police Department personnel will be on-site through tomorrow.

There appears to be no connection to the University. Hollins University is cooperating with the Police Department and notified their students, faculty and staff of the police presence on campus.

No further information is available at this time.

Once again state health officials are reporting less than 100 new coronavirus cases in the Roanoke Valley.According to the latest numbers released this morning by VDH there are 37 new confirmed or probable coronavirus cases. 15 new cases in Roanoke County, 14 new cases in Roanoke City, 3 new cases in Salem, and 5 in Botetourt County. No new hospitalizations or deaths are being attributed to the Roanoke Valley.

According to the latest numbers released this morning by the Virginia Department of Health there are 14 new confirmed or probable coronavirus cases, and 1 new hospitalization, being reported in the Roanoke Valley. 4 new cases in Roanoke City, 6 new cases in Roanoke County, 2 new cases and 1 new hospitalization in Salem, and 2 new cases in Botetourt County.

According to the latest numbers released this morning by the Virginia Department of Health there are 129 new confirmed or probable coronavirus cases, 4 new deaths, and 3 new hospitalizations being reported in the Roanoke Valley. 38 new cases, and 2 new deaths in Roanoke City, 60 new cases,3 new hospitalizations, and 2 new deaths in Roanoke County, 19 new cases in Salem, and 12 new cases in Botetourt County.

Hunter “Alex” Trail

Roanoke City Police are asking for the public’s help to locate a missing minor. Authorities say 16-year-old Hunter “Alex” Trail, was reported missing yesterday after he was last seen at his home in the 47 hundred block of Long Acre Dr. NE. Trail was last seen wearing a blue shirt with black pants.

UPDATE NEWS RELEASE: Roanoke Police have taken a juvenile male into custody regarding this incident.

Throughout the course of the investigation, Detectives were able to determine that this juvenile was the suspect. The victim of this incident, also a juvenile male, and the suspect are known to one another. Petitions for malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony were obtained. The juvenile male came to the Roanoke Police Department and was taken into custody on a detention order on January 20, 2021. The juvenile was transported to the Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Center. This remains an ongoing investigation. No further details are available at this time.

PREVIOUS: On December 26, 2020 at about 6:37 PM, Roanoke Police were dispatched to 4802 Valley View Boulevard regarding a report of shots fired inside the mall on the upper level.

Upon arrival, officers located an individual who had been struck by gunfire. Roanoke Fire-EMS transported the individual to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. Additional responding officers along with members from the Roanoke County Police Department and the Virginia State Police responded to assist in safely clearing the patrons from the mall.

Preliminary information is that several individuals were involved in a verbal altercation, when one individual began shooting, which struck the injured person. At this time, no arrests have been made and no one is in custody. This is an ongoing incident, and we ask that everyone avoid the area around Valley View Mall until further notice.

PREVIOUS: Valley View Mall closed early Saturday evening for what the mall and Roanoke police call an “incident”. Roanoke Police and Fire-EMS crews responded, and a large emergency presence was seen outside the JC Penney entrance.
