Outgoing Roanoke City Police Chief Chris Perkins did some “myth busting” as he termed it during this morning’s City Council meeting. Perkins warned that City Council candidates who might campaign claiming Roanoke is a “dangerous city” are inaccurate. He said 3rd grade literacy efforts and higher high school graduation rates in Roanoke City habve helped lower juvenile crime rates. He also compared Roanoke’s violent crime rate favorably to cities like Asheville, Chattanoga,Greenville, South Carolina and Charlottesville. Perkins retires as Roanoke City Chief of Police at the end of the month.
