LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) – Liberty University says a student drowned while studying abroad in Indonesia.The university said in a news release that it was notified of Timothy Adams’ death on Saturday.According to the university, Adams was swimming in the ocean when he was caught in a strong current. It says he helped get others to safety before he was swept away. His body was recovered.Liberty president Jerry Falwell Jr. says in a statement that the university sends its “deepest sympathies” to Adams’ relatives and friends. Falwell adds that “by all accounts, his death was simply a tragic accident.”Adams was participating in an internship with the university’s global studies department.
ROANOKE, Va. (AP) – Roanoke police say a teenage girl was killed in a crash between a minivan and a tractor-trailer.Police identified the girl in a statement Saturday as 16-year-old Corrina Brown.The crash occurred Friday evening. The driver of the minivan and another passenger were hospitalized with injuries. The truck driver wasn’t hurt.No charges have been filed, and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
The Down by Downtown Music Festival that coincides with the Blue Ridge Marathon weekend from April 20th through the 22nd is bigger than ever this year. The Roanoke Outside Foundation took over the event last year and for 2017 they’ve enlisted Across the Way Productions of Floyd Fest fame to help book the music acts. Elmwood park, The Spot on Kirk and Soaring Ridge Craft Brewers are among the venues taking part in the Down by Downtown Festival, which was started by a group of volunteers. hhgregg will close 88 stores, including the one at Valley View Mall, in efforts to return to profitability. The electronics and appliance chain will keep 132 other stores open. hhgregg expects the impacted locations to close by mid-April.
