While the number of states that have legalized recreational marijuana use continues to grow a local coalition is asking parents to tell their children its not okay – for their sake. WFIR’s Gene Marrano has that story:
The American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop at Smith Mountain Lake celebrates its 14th anniversary today. Southeast region Executive vice-president Brant Woodward will be there as they recognize volunteers that helped help the thrift store raise more than 14 million dollars for cancer research to date. There’s a Discovery Store on Franklin Road in Roanoke as well. Speaking live in-studio this morning, Woodward said the Discovery Shop in Moneta has a special relationship with the High Point Furniture market. UVA QB Bryce Perkins threw for almost 200 cards as the Hoos beat the Cards. Linebacker Chris Snowden had a nice day also on Saturday for Virginia.
As part of “National Welcoming Week” the City of Roanoke and local partners are hosting a series of events designed to bring immigrants, refugees and natural-born residents together. More from WFIR’s Gene Marrano:
The Salem Half Marathon is exactly one month away. Two nights ago a brand new finisher’s medal was revealed at Olde Salem Brewery. Race director Molly Bullington says everyone who runs the half marathon, the 8-K race or the kid’s fun run will get some version of the colorful and larger medal.Bullington says they hope to see about 600 runners and walkers turn out for the 3rd annual race day on October 13th.
