There will be many changes to the 2014 Blue Ridge Marathon. Because of flooding on the Roanoke River in previous years, the course in that area will follow less of the greenway. In other changes,, the half marathon has been made tougher and a new 10K run has been added. Registration is open for the marathon that will run next April 26th. WFIR’s Bob Clark has the story.

If you are looking to become more active and healthy, a Wellbeing Fair is open to anyone on Thursday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Green Ridge Recreation Center and it is free. More than 30 experts in the health care, nutrition and fitness fields will be at the fair. A blood drive also will be held beginning at 3:00 p.m. in cooperation with Virginia Blood Donors. A proposal that would allow two-year community college students complete their four-year degree at two-year college prices will be submitted to the state legislature for approval. The State Council of Higher Education is recommending the plan from the Virginia Community College System, and the President of Virginia Western Community College says many area students would benefit. It is a busy day for Appalachian power crews after strong overnight winds knocked out power to at least 4,200 Virginia customers. The number was coming down slowly at midday, and Apco officials say full restoration is still some time away. WFIR’s Bob Clark has the story.
