RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Four free training sessions will be offered to help citizens, media representatives and public employees learn more about gaining access to public records under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. The Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council will host the sessions, beginning later this month. Each session will provide an overview of how to make a public records request, how to respond to records requests, information on exemptions from mandatory disclosure and remedies available if the law is violated. The training presentations will be held at the Pocahontas Building on July 25, Aug. 29, Oct. 3 and Nov. 7. Each presentation is pre-approved for 1.5 hours of continuing legal education credit for attorneys. The training also will satisfy the annual training requirement for FOIA officers.
