SALEM ― The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) has released a draft Six-Year Improvement Program which includes funding for projects in Governor Bob McDonnell’s historic transportation package.
The CTB will hold four public hearings to solicit public comments about essential rail, transit, transportation demand management, bicycle, pedestrian and highway projects in the Working Draft of the Fiscal Year 2012-2017 Six-Year Improvement Program (SYIP) to be approved by the CTB in June 2011.
For the Salem, Bristol, Lynchburg, and Staunton transportation districts, citizens will have the have an opportunity to comment on the proposed program at a public hearing on May 12 at VDOT’s Salem District Office located at 731 Harrison Ave., Salem Va. 24153. The hearing begins at 6 p.m.
For Salem District, the draft plan would fund the following projects:
-Route 460 Southgate Connector in Blacksburg – this is a project will relocate Southgate Drive to the south and extend across Route 460 Business with a diverging diamond interchange. Design is expected to get underway early in 2012.
-Route 460 Interchange Improvements at Ramble Road and the Industrial Park in Blacksburg – this project will improve the intersection of the Route 460 Bypass with Ramble Road and Industrial Park Road. Design is expected get underway in early 2012.
-Interstate 581’s Valley View Interchange – this project would complete the current partial interchange at I-581’s Exit 3C by constructing an off-ramp from I-581 southbound onto Valley View Boulevard, constructing an on-ramp from Valley View Boulevard to I-581 northbound and constructing new auxiliary lanes along I-581 between Valley View Boulevard and Hershberger Road.
-Access Management Improvements at Interstate 81’s Exit 150 – Preliminary plans include providing a roundabout instead of a traffic signal to enhance traffic flow at the Exit 150B/Route 11 intersection, adding a dedicated Exit 150B off-ramp with northbound 220 to enhance the existing Route 11/220/220A intersection and provide improved access management. In addition, Exit 150A would have access to Route 11 southbound only, construction of a new northbound I-81 on-ramp would be provided adjacent to Exit 150B. The existing I-81 northbound on-ramp would be closed.
-Route 58 Corridor Development – This would include two projects in the tri-county and Laurel Fork areas of Carroll, Floyd and Patrick counties that would complete the widening of 8.2 miles of Route 58 from two lanes to four.
-Route 114 (Peppers Ferry Road) improvements in Christiansburg – This project would include widening 1.5 miles of Route 114 (Peppers Ferry Road) from Route 460 to just west of the Christiansburg Town limits.
Following public hearings around the state, the CTB will vote on a final plan on June 15 that will go into effect starting the fiscal year starting July 1.
