From Olde Salem Brewing Company: Good morning! Well, as most of you gathered, we have some news to share! 315 Market Street in downtown Roanoke will be our second home! We are very excited for the opportunity to join the other fantastic breweries that currently occupy downtown, and bring some Salem flavor to the market! Over the coming weeks we will be working through the process of getting the space ready for opening, and as soon as we can, we will let you know a date that we will open the doors! Previously we had announced plans to open a second location in the Wasena area, and we tried very hard to make that work. Unfortunately, the property that we hoped to utilize ultimately needed more work than we were able to do to pull off a brewery there. It was a tough decision, but when the opportunity arose for 315 Market St, we knew we had to take it. Everyone at Olde Salem Brewing Company is thrilled to join downtown Roanoke, we can’t wait to see you soon!

Governor Glenn Youngkin today called for decisive action in support of Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion. The Governor directed an immediate review of state procurement of any and all goods and services involving Russian companies, called for Virginia Mayors to terminate sister-city partnerships with Russian cities, and urged the Virginia Retirement System and university endowments to divest any Russian holdings immediately.

“The invasion of Ukraine by Soviet dictator Vladimir Putin cannot stand, and the people of the Commonwealth are ready to rally in opposition to this senseless attack on a sovereign nation and western ideals,” said Governor Youngkin. “Today, we are acting to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they defend their country. And while these are important steps, it is incumbent upon President Biden to take a stronger, more decisive leadership position to end this war.”

Actions taken by Governor Youngkin today include:

Ordering the Department of General Services to immediately review all contracts across government and procurement to determine what, if any, Virginia tax dollars are spent on goods and services from primarily Russian companies.

Calling on The City of Norfolk and the City of Roanoke to end sister city partnerships with Russian cities.

Calling on the Virginia Retirement System Board of Trustees and university endowment funds to divest in a prudent and orderly fashion any and all holdings of the Russian Ruble and any and all securities of Russian companies

From Govenor Youngkin’s Twitter: Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is an assault on a sovereign nation and will have devastating consequences for Ukrainian citizens. This senseless, unprovoked attack undermines democracy worldwide and we must hold Russia accountable. And we pray for the Ukrainian people and for peace.

Andy Parker, the father of slain WDBJ-7 journalist Allison Parker, recently announced his intention to run against Republican 5th District Congressman Bob Good. Parker, a Democrat, tells Cardinal News, “I’m joining the race because the people in the 5th district deserve better; they deserve someone who understands the challenges that the people face.” Good won his seat by defeating Democrat Cameron Webb in 2020.

( From Bedford County Sheriff’s Office)

From Bedford County Sheriff’s Office: On 1/25/22 the Bedford County Sheriff’s received a tip from crime stoppers and also the humane society in reference to possible animal hoarding and cruelty occurring at a residence on the 1500 block of Eagle View Drive located in the Goodview area of Bedford County. Animal Control Deputies arrived at the residence to find approximately 26 dogs in and around the residence in poor living conditions and malnourished. Deputies then secured and served a search warrant for the property to recover the animals and get them treated. With the help of the nonprofit organization “Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter” and Dr. Ryan at Riverside Veterinarian Clinic assisting in this investigation, Deputies were able to transport all of the animals away from the scene to receive treatment and be housed. The suspect in this case, Thomas Duggins, age 71 of Goodview Virginia was arrested on scene and at this time charged with 10 counts of animal neglect. This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be sought at the completion. The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the public for alerting us to this situation so we could step in and help the helpless. This large-scale rescue could not have been possible without the assistance of Dr. Ryan at the Riverside Veterinary Clinic and the “Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter”. This is just the beginning for these rescued animals, and they will require additional care and treatment, so if anyone in the public would like to help, “friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter” are a nonprofit and accept donations which would be put to good use helping these animals.

Beginning Monday, Jan. 24, Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) will adjust daily opening hours to noon at its 395 stores.

Increasing numbers of ABC’s retail employees continue to be affected by COVID-19 making staffing in stores difficult. This change in hours will enable Virginia ABC’s limited workforce to better serve its customers. Store closing times will remain the same.

“Like other retailers affected by pandemic-related staffing shortages, we are modifying our store hours to reduce the need to close stores because of employee quarantines,” said CEO Travis Hill. “Opening at noon meets the needs of the majority of our customers, most of whom prefer to shop in the afternoon.”

Virginia ABC continues to follow safety measures recommended for retailers by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). All ABC stores are equipped with Plexiglas shields at registers and undergo daily cleaning and sanitizing with particular attention to the most frequented areas. All store employees are required to wear face masks. For everyone’s health and safety, customers are encouraged to also wear face masks when shopping in an ABC store.

As an alternative to in-store shopping, customers can place orders online at www.abc.virginia.gov for curbside pickup or home delivery in nearly all areas of the commonwealth.

ABC continues to monitor information coming from the CDC, VDH and the governor’s office regarding COVID-19. Future decisions related to ABC store operations will be made with guidance from these official sources and implemented on a case-by-case basis.
